So here we are months on from the start of the great Covid-19 pandemic but, crucially, are we any further forward? There is no single answer to that question. Many things are much as before but on the other hand we have learnt a great deal. We also have to be honest in that the Government has learnt the hard way; by making unpopular decisions, and yes, by making mistakes. Then as quickly as possible seeking to correct itself. We all know this is not an ideal way to go about governing but as Mrs Thatcher might have said: 'there's no alternative! Even though Covid-19 is so dominant other aspects of government go on as they should. The Brexit negotiations continue and the UK holds the line. Writing in the website, 'The Conservative Woman', Timothy Bradshaw reminds us -
'In February the Prime Minister did point out in a deliciously defiant and uplifting Greenwich speech: ‘The EU has enforced state aid rules against the UK only four times in the last 21 years, compared with 29 actions against France, 45 against Italy and 67 against Germany
Hence the Government has good reason to stand firm on the subject of state aid, and for that matter fishing. Although as you will have noticed there are hostile sections of the media who may think otherwise.
However, political life is not all 'hardware'. There is a philosophical side to politics too. We may imagine that if the Government were not so busy with Covid-19 it would be fighting back in the culture wars. It's not only a hostile media but also some very dubious political groupings that wish this trouble upon the UK. On that score there is a very good article in conservativehome.com
